Rebecca Ware

Rebecca D. Ware, age 93, died on December 7, 2009 at Henrico Doctors Hospital. She was the daughter of Harden Lunsford Duke and Martha Brown Christmas Duke. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, W. Reid Ware; sister, Lucy O. R. Duke; and brothers, W.E. and L. Andrew Duke. She is survived by a daughter, Martha Lonergan Bill of Burnt Hills, N.Y.; sons, William Diane of Mechanicsville, Va. and David Suzy of Charles City, Va.; sisters-in-law, Lillian Duke of Beaverdam, Va. and Constance Ware of Mineral, Va. Surviving grandchildren are Richard Reid Lonergan, William Ware Lonergan and Richard Andrew Harrison Ware. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Rebecca graduated from Apple Grove High School at age 15 and from the University of Virginia Hospital School of Nursing in 1938. She worked as a registered nurse at Grace Hospital in Richmond prior to her marriage in 1940. She and Reid lived for a year in Pennsylvania, seven years in Charlottesville, Va., and moved back to her family farm in Bumpass in 1948, where she lived out her life. Being a Christian was her primary concern. She was a lifelong member of Bethany Christian Church. In addition to loving and caring for her family, she enjoyed cooking, sewing, farming and gardening. Graveside services will be held Saturday, December 12, at 11 a.m. at the family cemetery on Lucy Duke Lane, Bumpass, Va. Following the services, the family will receive visitors at the Bethany Christian Church multi-purpose building. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are requested to the B. H. Bryant Preaching Scholarship Fund, Emmanuel School of Religion, in care of Lacy Funeral Home, 6241 Cross County Road, Mineral, Va. 23117.
