Evelyn Myers Besley, 99 of Mineral, Virginia, widow of William Brooks Besley, died Tuesday, June 3, 2014. She retired from Besley Implements in 2006 after 48 years as bookkeeper. She spent her remaining years enjoying her family, hummingbirds, plants, flowers and eating out.Evelyn was the sixth of seven daughters born to Jacob Benton and Lumina Peck Myers of Fincastle, Virginia. She was predeceased by her parents and sisters; Kathleen Glasgow, Ruth Myers, Louise Bolton, Mary Walshe, Frances Wade and Lumina Shaver.Surviving “Mama” are her children; Susan (Joseph) Bradford of Mineral, Sarah (Robert) Keller of Louisa, Brooks (Kate) Besley of Bumpass and Lumina (Ronald) Shifflett of Hot Springs. She was “Grandmother/MA” to; William (Shannon) Bradford, Emily Keller, John (Katherine) Besley, Sara (Matthew) Rohr, Craig (Tricia) Besley, Miles (Melisa) Shifflett and Keith (Amanda) Besley.She was “Grandma Evelyn” to eight great-grandchildren; Elizabeth, Alexander, Evelyn, Andrew and Isabella Bradford, Matilda Shifflett, Jackson Besley and Henry Besley. Other survivors include numerous nieces, cousins and nephews and “MizKat” (the fifteen year old cat faithfully fed by Mr. & Mrs. B).Memorial service will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, June 21, 2014 at Mineral United Methodist Church, 301 W. Third Street, Mineral, Virginia. Family and friends will be received immediately after the service in Gibson Fellowship Hall.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts to Mineral United Methodist Church, P.O. Sarah, Susan, Brooks and Lumina,I was saddened to learn of the passing of your Mother. I did not realize that she had reached the age of 99, quite a task for anyone! I know that you all have been devoted to Mrs. B and that will comfort you in the coming days. I always enjoyed meeting up with Mrs. B and we would chat a lot about the mountains where both she and my husband were born. I pray that The Lord will grant you the peace to surround you during this period of separation. God Bless you all!
It was with sadness to learn of the passing of Mrs. Besley. I will forever cherish the friendship we shared over the years. It was a pleasure and honor to know such a genuine, kind and compassionate lady. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers at this difficult time and thereafter.
